    Anniversaries: People of Note

    In other words, performing musicians.

I'm going to start this thread by mentioning that champion of ancient music - my Former Colleague Anthony Halstead who on next Thursday 18th June will be celebrating his 70th birthday

HIPP, HIPP ... you know the rest!

Like it, HS - People of Note
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Shouldn't the heading read "People of Notes"?

If you'll pardon my saying so, that appears to miss the very point of the play on words implicit in HS's heading!

          Thank you for that.

In deciding upon a title for this new conversation, it was always my intention to choose a phrase which is capable of more than one interpretation.

You have saved me the problem of having to explain myself.

Composers whose Music I'm sure you've both played include Franz Danzi (of wind quintet fame) and Edvard Grieg; both of whom were born 80 years apart on today's date (1763 and 1843).

Yes. I played that Danzi 5tet back in 1969. Can't say I remember much about it now.

              Keep them coming!

HS, today is the 82nd birthday of my musical hero, and your old friend from National Service days, Julian Bream. I first heard him in Oxford Town Hall on 13 November 1969 and many times subsequently. I've heard him in solo recitals, playing duets with John Williams, concertos with Malcolm Arnold and André Previn, and accompanying Peter Pears on guitar and lute. I've sat feet away from him playing an all-Dowland programme on the lute - he introduced me to this repertoire, and to the instrumental music of 16th and 17th century Spain.

The concert with André Previn conducting the Melos Ensemble was the first performance (November 1970, I think) of the concerto by Richard Rodney Bennett. Another forumite, Lordgeous, was turning the pages for him.

Happy birthday Julian Bream Here's a recital he gave in 1978 in the chapel of Wardour Castle where he made many recordings - it begins with a performance of Bach's Prelude, Fugue and Allegro BVW 998.
