Oh - those wonderful Rathbone/Bruce black and white films; to Conan Doyle what Stokowski was to Bach. Among my lifelong pleasures since they scared the living daylights out of me at around age five.

Orchesographie. So many memories (not about CDs though).

Got my first bunch of early HIPP LPs from Orchesographie, plus many other recordings, and a few E.N.O. comps, too. Fine memories indeed.

Orchesography if this pedant is right! Originally the Ballet Bookshop, Cecil Court, the owner, David Drummond and his partner, subsequently opened Orchesography, next door for CDs only, in the 80s. Usually a generous discount and I acquired a substantial Schnittke collection on BIS and Chandos recordings. The other advantage was that Templar Records was also nearby, opposite the Garrick Theatre, or a short walk to Newport Court (behind Leicester Sq u/g) where Steve Miller presided. also generous with punchbowl offerings at Festive occcasions.

Alberto Remedios used to visit the Ballet Bookshop with a quota of ENO comps. Alas, he wasn't offered the role of Peter Grimes at 'The Coli' but gave a first rate concert performance with Chelsea Opera as compensation. Happy memories.

Indeed. And Warlock's suite is of tunes from Orchésograhie. Delibes also used at least one in Le Roi s'Amuse (The King Plays With Himself).

- a little place (name?) just in a small street between/just off Leicester Sq and Charing Cross Rd run by two elderly-ish gents

I remember this tiny shop as Templar Records on Irving St, off the SE corner of Leicester Sq.

The two unsmiling gents were very knowledgeable, especially on opera, and the latest opera releases were often displayed, invitingly, in their small front window. The tardis-like interior was able to accommodate so many CDs because most were shelved spine-out. A good deal of my pocket money and student grant (!) ended up in their pockets over a period of two decades. Possibly my most revelatory purchase there was the EMI LP box Wagner on Record ; I'd never heard a voice like Melchior's before.
