    Berwick Market, SoHO: Vinyl Purchases

Anyone familiar with this outdoor market/ From what I've read it is a good place to buy old records. Any other suggestions?

Any one familiar with a shop called Music and Goods exchange in Notting Hill? They run an ad in Gramophone...

I find most of my pre-loved vinyl in OXFAM shops these days, Richard.

Interesting. I've given up on Oxfam and other charity shops, I never find anything except either rubbish, or occasionally, in Oxfam, very overpriced discs. Most of my LPs have been bought either in Ben's Collectors Records in Tunsgate, Guildford (Ben Darnton) or Fine Records in George Street, Hove (Julian Pelling). Both worth a visit, but its advisable to ring first to ask if they've got anything interesting, both will tell you its getting harder and harder to find good stock. Ben is on 01483 301165, Julian is on 01273 723345.

There is a record shop in Farnham called 101 Records, run (or was, when I last visited eight or nine years ago) by a guy called Andy. I dont know if it is still in business, but Ben Darnton will know, he used to manage it. Andy used to have good stuff, now and then.

I have bought LPs in that shop in Notting Hill and some were OK, but check carefully, I seem to remember some werent in very good condition.

If you are down west, try Audio Destination in Tiverton (Mike and Caroline Rogers), tel. 01884 243584. They stock secondhand vinyl from the sixties and seventies, German reissues of the now very expensive classic vinyl (Decca 2000 series, that sort of stuff) at twenty five pounds each, and new issues by pop and folk groups who for some reason want to issue their material on vinyl as well as CD and downloads.

The German reissues are a bit worrying, because I cant tell them from the originals. I worry that one day I'll be offered one by a dealer, probably in good faith, and pay huge sums for what is, in effect, a fake.

And if you do get to Tiverton, give me a call, I only live a few miles away. Mike and Caroline have my number, my real name is Chris (the retired scientist who is always buying weird classical CDs, they'll recognise the description!).

I'm sorry, sloppy, but as a Colonial bumbling about, could you tell me where in London Tiverton is? My guide book doesn't reference it. We will be staying at the Millenium Bailey in South Kensington, btw.

... Tiverton is some 180 miles west of London. Even a Texan might think that a bit far...

Tee hee, I'm not surprised your guide book doesnt tell you whereabouts in London Tiverton is, if it did I'd suggest you buy a new guide book. Tiverton is in Devon, north of Exeter and south of Exmoor. About 180 miles south west of London. An easy if boring drive down the motorways, or take the train to Tiverton station, but make sure you tell me arrival time so I can meet you: Tiverton station is not in Tiverton, but about six miles outside the town. Or you could fly to Exeter and then catch a train one stop back up the track. If you wanted to make the journey, you could get there and back to London in a day, if you made an early start. Alternatively, I'd be happy to put you up for the night: the local pub does good food, so you wouldnt have to endure my cooking.

Heck of an offer. Isn't Devon about where The Hound Of The Baskervilles is set? i always wanted to see the moor at night after reading that. Probably not his trip, but perhaps in the future...

....or arrive by narrow boat. Isn't Tivvy on the Great Western Canal?

That's right, 'The Hound of the Baskervilles' is set on Dartmoor, south of Tiverton. 'Lorna Doone', 19th century romantic novel, is set on Exmoor just to the north (I havent read it, though I saw it serialised on the TV when I was a child). I'm not sure I want to see Dartmoor at night though; unlike Watson I dont have an old service revolver to deal with enormous dogs covered in phosphorescent paint! There are lots of movie versions, as well as one I discovered recently that was made for Granada Television as one of a long series of Holmes stories. It starred Jeremy Brett as Holmes and Nigel Hardwicke as Watson and was very good. I must track down the film version starring Christopher Lee as Sir Henry, a rare example of the late lamented Lee not playing the villain.

Berwick Street Market was a good traditional fruit & veg market when I lived in London (20 years ago). On regular visits since I've seen it go downhill, with stalls selling olives & things like artisanal bread . On my last visit in the middle of May most of the road was being dug up & there were very few market stalls. The cheap records were sold by a shop called Cheapo Cheapo, not actually in the market, but I think that closed some time ago.

(btw, the h in Soho isn't capitalised, as it's not an abreviation of anything, unlike the place in New York )

Thanks--in New York it stands for South of Houston Street

Ardcarp, Tiverton is on the canal, but you can only go about ten miles east by boat, and then you either have to pick up your boat and carry it across the A361, or turn back. It does carry on for a few more miles on the other side of the road, according to my OS map, but not very far.

Ah ... well, some of them will have to stay in the pub, I havent got that many spare beds! Umslopogaas Mansions is a four bedroom house, accommodating enough for one ageing Zulu warrior, but not quite on the scale of Baskerville Hall.
