I wonder if anyone remember's Derek Bailey's fascinating little book Improvisation, which appeared in 1980. As someone who spent years writing orchestral scores which we re never performed I was interested in his own revelation that he used to do this until one day he realised that it wasn't as satisfying as actually playing spontaneously (improvising, in fact) and from then on he was devoted to pure improviosation. He called the former activity 'score-making' and said it might be regarded as an arcane branch of literature.
