Why not Strauss's Bürger als Edelmann suite, or Grétry's opera Andromaque - or even Cardew's Bun No. 1 (which I'd have assumed Bryn might have suggested by now)?

After a day of boring work meetings (NO LUNCH)myself and a couple of colleagues decided to pop in for some crap food and a moan about said meetings.

The entrance hall of Hounslow West Tube Station usually has classical works playing over the 'Tannoy' at moderate sound levels - mainly Beethoven.

I wonder why "mainly Beethoven"? - and why "Hounslow West"? - and does anyone appear to take any notice or be otherwise affected by it? Is there any reliable documented evidence that it discourages the riff-raff by encouraging in some of their number the desire to use Hounslow Central instead?

I recall years ago David Matthews saying (though with what degree of seriousness I'd prefer not to hazard a guess) that, as a composer, one knows that one has made it when invited to be a castaway on Desert Island Discs, to which I replied "no - one knows that one has made it as a composer when someone chooses one of one's works to take to that mythical island"; perhaps, however, one has only really made it as a composer once one's work has been relayed across the "Tannoy" at Hounslow West Tube altough, should that ever happen to mine, I can imagine the Piccadilly Line being emptied of customers before they even become passengers and TFL's buses all becoming full beyond bursting point.

Speaking of the London Underground, I always thought that the advertising slogan for it from many years ago "it's quicker by tube" was in fact for an IVF clinic...

Brilliant! (though don't call Bryn "Sir"; he might not like that!)...

Reminds me en passant of the response of a disgruntled audience member at a production of Siegfried at ROH being roundly berated when his mobile went off; "come on - gimme a break - it is a Ring tone, after all!"...

Pancakes with Butter, Maple Syrup and Bacon and the TV Weatherman a la David Bedford.

Oh, and a side-dish of chips. Mucho presto por favor.

It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Oh, for God's sake don't encourage them - either of them! - especially given the shaky position of Kiev itself these days (one to which the relaying of Mozart over loudspeakers anywhere is unlikely to improve matters)...
