Karajan Lohengrin BPO

The overture featured on Saturday last's Record Review on a Warner CD. I thought the sound and playing was sublime and so went off in search of a CD of the whole opera.

But....I have drawn a blank. Is that because this recording was never released on CD ?

Herbert's 1975-1981 EMI studio recording of 'Lohengrin', with Rene Kollo, Anna Tomowa-Sintow and Siegmund Nimsgern, was issued on CD in EMI's mid-price opera series in the 1990s, and reissued intheir bumper 'Karajan - the complete EMI recordings vol 2' after his death. EMI was bought by Warner sometime later (2018?).

It's only fair to report that multiple problems beset the jinxed recording sessions (detailed by Richard Osborne in his Karajan biography) so be warned. I don't have the Karajan but do have Kempe and Abbado.

Was the Overture recording at one time issued on World Record Club ST639 and also there were two volumes of Wagner overtures and other orchestral bits on two LPs in his later EMI phase in thev70s. Lohengrin PrelmAct 1 was on an stereo / quadraphonic ASD3130. The ST639 content is on a downlad from Presto at £4.59 mp3 and more for better quality!
the Lohengrin Prel 1 is only £1.05!

You're right, cloughie. Those recordings , made in November 1960 in the Grunewaldkirche, came at the end of Herbert's Columbia years, and. like others of his 1950s Columbia recordings , were reissued on WRC by Anthony Griffith when he took control of the label following its purchase by EMI.
