    Snape Proms 2015

Snape's proms become more and more popular music and less classical every year which is depressing .

On the bright side they have some crackers this year - Benjamin Grosvenor coming to play Chopin's Second Piano Sonata , Christian Blackshaw in the last three Schubert Piano Sonatas , Alina Ibragimova in Bach and Vivaldi , the NYO and Mark Elder in Mahler 9 ( now there must be a good chance that the NYO will turn up at the Proms ) and a concert with the LPO/Pappano including Schumann 4 and Dorothea Roschmann singing the Four Last Songs - plus two concerts from the Borodin Quartet .

They are - and with the Mahler: the parents of one performer are very proud and excited!

I imagine that that is the result of the whittling away of Arts Council subsidy. I certainly want to hear the National Youth Choir of Great Britain in Brumel, Lauridsen and Bach.

Who can get to a Snape Prom, and return home afterwards, without private transport?

I would expect very little public subsidy for a concert hall in an inaccessible backwater.

You could get a cab from Saxmundham station not very far away .

That's because they don't get adequate public subsidy for public transport. Like with arts subsidies, London takes the lion's share.

It's hardly likely to improve now with you-know-who in charge.

I suspect Pierre Laurent Aimard is in charge of the Festival programme - I suspect there will be serious ructions if RW tries to dumb down Aldeburgh .

5 miles each way. Last return train to Ipswich at 21:57. No, thank you.

Yes, I know! That's why I was asking whether anyone knew of any public transport to anywhere in the vicinity with either onward public transport links or plenty of accommodation. I see, from the Aldeburgh Music website, that there are return Festival buses from Aldeburgh to all concerts outside the town, but outside the Festival there aren't. Arts funding is usually contingent on accessibility, and it surprises me that Snape Concert Hall has been publicly supported, with its location apparently inaccessible from everywhere outside the village, except by private transport. Is there any other such venue anywhere in the UK? It must be the loss of very many people, and not just of me.

Many folks feel the same about the Wigmore Hall

Despite the lack of public transport audiences continue to attend the Snape Proms largely because it is almost impossible to live in a predominantly rural county and not have your own transport. We're used to doing without buses.

It amuses me when people from large conurbations feel hard done to. If I want to go to the massively subsidised Proms, I either have to drive for 6 hours, or to catch 3 trains, not counting the Underground.

But Snape Concert Hall is a major regional venue for the East of England. If it were in Ipswich, the rural private car drivers would still be able to attend and many Suffolk people who don't have access to private transport would also be able to attend concerts. The only people who would lose out would be the handful of Snape villagers without private transport.
