Great news for all Elgarians. A discard pile of musical manuscript, found in the RCM, has revealed a large number of sketches for what would have been the final oratorio in Elgar's proposed trilogy. Such is the breadth of material, hitherto thought not to exist, that Anthony Payne has agreed to realise the sketches and produce the Elgar oratorio that no-one ever thought would see the light of day, The Last Judgement, following on from where The Kingdom left off.
Much of the thematic material confirms Elgar's continued us of motivic material used in The Apostles and The Kingdom. It has been known for some time that the prelude was used by the composer for the opening of his 3rd symphony.
The world premiere is planned for the spring of 2017.
