    Elgar's The Last Judgement.

Great news for all Elgarians. A discard pile of musical manuscript, found in the RCM, has revealed a large number of sketches for what would have been the final oratorio in Elgar's proposed trilogy. Such is the breadth of material, hitherto thought not to exist, that Anthony Payne has agreed to realise the sketches and produce the Elgar oratorio that no-one ever thought would see the light of day, The Last Judgement, following on from where The Kingdom left off.

Much of the thematic material confirms Elgar's continued us of motivic material used in The Apostles and The Kingdom. It has been known for some time that the prelude was used by the composer for the opening of his 3rd symphony.

The world premiere is planned for the spring of 2017.

By the Portsmouth Sinfonietta, so I've heard. One to listen out for ...
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Sinfonia (it's important to get these things right, don't you think? )

I once nearly convinced my daughter that El-gar was Spanish for "the station"
(but then she went to school )

                  How typical.
Great news spoiled by stupid posts.

I am so pleased to hear this news. For me Elgar's oratorios are a delight - 'The Apostles' in particular and I shall look forward to Anthony Payne's realisation.

Great news indeed. Looking forward to it (though I must admit that for me Elgar's oratorios are a bit too much of the good thing - and I cannot really stand Gerontius)
If it's a job in the same category as the 3rd symphony we might be in for some nice surprises....

That's an old Fwank Muir gag; Elgar = Catalan train station.

That said, Elgar's Last Judgement always puts me in mind of Stainer's Crucifixion as being arguably a good idea...

That said - and to be serious - anything that Tony Payne does with the material can be absolutely relied upon to provide the best possible answer to whatever the questions posed by it might be; the Third Symphony in particular proves that beyond all reasonable question.

I think we need to remember that on this day 8 years ago, someone discovered the village of Asterix the Gaul, including a statue of Cacofonix the Bard.
