    Bach Partitas for Keyboard 1 - 6

... i have found these works of transcendental balm since my first purchase of Glen Gould, his double lp of all six partitas

Tureck, Hewitt have come and gone; Gould might be pause for critical thought but what the heck he is what he is and remains indispensable

Weissenberg is dramatic mesmerising and too too fast on occasion

    Argerich maybe and Perahia always

currently fascinated by Marcelle Meyer's playing [in one of those delightful mp3 bargains from Amazon]

do others enjoy these pieces as deeply? who plays them to your taste?

Very much indeed, calum. I have the Schiff recordings (I especially like his playing of the second partita). Marcelle Meyer is superb though I have only heard her in Rameau. not in these works. I think Lipatti's performance of the first partita is memorable.

... the Gould - well, as you say "he is what he is"; I love it. The Meyer (only 1,2,3,6 I think?) is delicious.

But there is one performance that absolutely outclasses them all -

For me it is the best thing Scott Ross ever did, among his extraordinary accomplishments. The legend has it that they were recorded in one session, throughout the night, he at the limit of his health but in 'a state of grace'. Among the most 'perfect' Bach CDs I can think of.

Heaven! Thanks for sharing. Couldn't resist ordering too!

Just been reading up on him - can't believe he died aged 38.

I've always loved Kenneth Gilbert's accounts that he recorded for Harmonia Mundi, but they have sadly long been absent from the catalogue.

Kenneth Gilbert - so much of his stuff is currently absent from the catalogue! I really hope that perhaps we are due a big box 'retrospective' of all his CDs. I wdn't mind the fact that for me there wd be quite a lot of duplicates...

There's this new one, Vints, but it is only his Bach recordings for Archiv...I would like to get it, but it would mean my duplicating the 48 again...

My antivirus software decided to block the site "contains dubious unwanted material". Ah well.

Only 3 recorded by him but I find Peter Anderszewski's recording very satisfying and where appropriate smoulderingly passionate. He is not one to eschew the possibilities offered by the modern concert grand, so may not suit all tastes but he does the trick for me.

We were lucky enough to hear him play Bach at the EIF last year and found it mesmerising.
