But what did you expect? A thread about an event on the radio that is linked to a campaign, which WWD is, would be naturally about the issue. If only Radio 3 were more independently minded and scheduled a day of women composers irrespective of any social issues, we would certainly have talked about the music and would have been much happier. Until some people start saying that music can never be separated from social issues….

I found the whole idea of a day devoted to female composers a real turn-off. Not because they were women, but because it was effectively saying to the listener, here' s a whole load of composers you're probably never heard before, there's a complete range of styles, date of composition, type of orchestral/solo/choral work. Oh, and we'll be having a lot of pc chat about why most of these composers didn't fulfil their true potential. OK, sit back and listen!

(No idea if the chat was all pc, probably wasn't, but I feared the worst and turned off.)

At least a Bach or whoever marathon means you know whether or not you're likely to enjoy it or discover new interesting pieces. This appeared to be too much of a mixed bag for me to want to spend time listening, on the off-chance I'd enjoy some of it.

Far better to drip-feed pieces into general programming, IMHO.
Oh dear - here we go yet again: condemnation without first bothering to find out.

And, really, isn't it about time we ditched this catch-all, namby-pamby journalist cliche "pc", so easy to swing like a demolition squad ball and chain?

Agreed - let's say cultural Marxism from now on.

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.

I should hasten to add (probably too late!) that I was not intentionally making a macho point; rather, using a one-ball analogy with demolition work as a metaphor for overlooking that there are two sides (at least) to any disputed subject.

You are confusing me not knowing what I'm saying and not knowing what to say. These are two completely different propositions.

                        From now on, you mean?

I'd rather not say that at all, thanks!
