I have often posted about Joan Tower (b. 06/09/38). I really like her Concerto For Orchestra, which is available on Naxos. As is her glorious 'DNA' which is on an 'American Music For Percussion' compilation.

There are plenty of things to read and find out if you look

The rather bizarre idea that somehow location & nationality is OK to refer to but somehow gender isn't is a bit ridiculous IMV

Mr Tipps's (is that the right ' ?) idea that

Women, like men, should be judged entirely on ability.
Would be great if it was true, put simply they aren't and haven't been in the past.
Which is why we need things like this

But even so, these are not the only R3 programmes on which her music could be featured but generally isn't!

No, indeed it isn't - and perhaps the most constructive outcome of a day of music by women composers broadcast on R3 is the learning (by those who create programmes there) of the lesson that far more music by women composers should far more frequently be broadcast than is or ever has been the case - and without any fuss about the fact of the music having been composed by women who, like male composers, happen all to be human beings, actually...

It isn't "gender" - it's "sex". In most other languages, the moon and the sea are feminine, but they aren't female. The world and sun are masculine, but they aren't male.

Still talking about women composers and their music, it is interesting to note the dis-proportionately high number of women pioneers of electronic music. Don't you think?

                    Excellent stuff
I think we should club together to buy a copy of Software for People (Pauline's 1st book) for PG Tippex

And what about Delia Derbyshire's Dr Who music? (forget Ron Grainer, I think I read somewhere that he didn't even recognise his sketches after Delia worked her magic!)

But not in English, which is the language we are communicating in here. So the discussion quite reasonably uses 'gender' in preference to 'sex', which has other connotations.
