IIRC (yes, I know) London was the capital "in Roman times" - when England wasn't in England, if you see what I mean - and Winchester was the capital when we had that spot of bother with the Vikings (coming over here, taking our jobs, pillaging our communities, playing Bruckner excruciatingly slowly). Alfred the Great moved the capital back to London after he'd made them aware that he was very cross with them.
