I think it is terrific news - he is a great conductor and how good to have a British conductor as music director of one of the London orchestras again.

Even though I have a lot of time for Simon and the work he does I think the idea that somehow his magic wand will make everything better is nonsense
      IT WON'T

On the train back to Birmingham this evening (I hear there is a concert hall here ?) I was reading in the Standard how its a great thing for the UK blah blah blah

At this rate there won't be any music education for him to support by the time he gets "back"
apart from the fact that he isn't really "coming back" just popping over for a few gigs.

as is often the case Jon Savage's comments are worth reading with reference to music education
I don't disagree with much of what you say (except about me being an arse!), but the crucial point is that he's a leader.

I don't buy all that "how good to have a British conductor as music director of one of the London orchestras again" crap either. It's about leadership.

Gergiev might be a better musician but he was no leader. Simon Dee will do the business!

And how good would it be if he were to programme some neglected British music.

I'm going to write to him about Robert Simpson, not because he was British but because between him, Eliot Carter and Rautavaara we've had some of the best music written RECENTLY, IMV. Rattle should give this music his attention.

What good is a leader when there's nothing to lead?

Don't get me wrong I think he has done some great things BUT he isn't the saviour of classical music, music education or even acoustics.

You're anarchist tendencies are getting in the way, here.

I'm not suggesting he's the new Messiah.

No, it's not a lexicographical point I'm making here, it's MrGG's pathology I'm referring to!

What crap . The fact that none of the London orchestras had a well known committed conductor from the UK has meant despite the quality of much of their work they have gained very little consciousness outside the classical music world .

As for leadership - what simplistic nonsense . What is the point of leadership if you can't conduct ?

                        Leadership is simple, not simplistic.

                        Simon can conduct.

I don't go in for the 'Little Englander' "ooh, he's British" stuff.

He's got Italian blood in him - that's cool

And when he conducts, he uses a baton, unlike you who thinks it's cool and trendy to use your 'bare hands'

Steve Hillage was born in Woodford AND CRASS ARE FROM EPPING!!!!!!!!!

Yes but I meant quite obviously the symphony orchestras rather than the ROH .
