Well, as it is Britten's Centenary Year I'm sure Rattle will find time to conduct some of his works.

Pappano? - but wouldn't he fancy an international appointment praps?

Gatti? - but he was at RPO & did well but has never really taken off. I like his work

Harding? - He's worked a lot in Europe - praps LSO prior to USA?

Gardner? - praops too low a profile - it woukld be good for both parties

MTT? - would be good but a step backwards

Luisi? - is he too busy at the Met?

Nelsons? - perhaps he's waiting for BPO, but it would be a step into the higher league after Brum

What about Esa-Pekka Salonen? His extended contract with the Philharmonia runs out in 2014. He would perhaps get the LSO to play more C20 music than they have recently. I was mightily impressed by the Bluebeard's Castle concert performance that Salonen and the Philharmonia gave last year in Birmingham, and their Prom was very good too.

Another Scandinavian option would be Sakari Oramo, but I suppose the LSO would want more of a famous "name" conductor....

I agree with you about Salonen but I guess that the Philharmionia would want to extend his contract. Oramo has only just started at BBCSO.

Maybe, but it already has been extended and Salonen may feel he wants a new challenge (if he is made an offer, that is). That said, I can't offhand recall his ever conducting the LSO.

Where to next for Sir Simon Rattle? Who is getting Berliner Philharmoniker job?

Where to next for Sir Simon Rattle who is being tipped for the job with the London Symphony Orchestra? We know he is leaving the Berliner Philharmoniker when his contract ends but why would he go to London. He is firmly established in the Wansee area of Berlin with a mezzo-soprano wife with her career, two children at local schools and a seven month old baby. Berlin is an ideal place to be based in the centre of Europe, so why would they uproot? I spoke at length with Magdalena Kozena last year and although she wasn’t letting the cat out of the bag to me I got the impression she wouldn’t be moving to London, why would she leave her Berlin home for an unfamiliar city. Somehow I can’t see Sir Simon him jetting all over the world as a freelance conductor. So where he will end up is a real mystery.

With regard to Sir Simon’s replacement at the Berliner Philharmoniker I have heard several names. Chailly told me he was sounded out but he is now in his sixties and securely at the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra and has started at La Scala. Sir Simon was forty-four when he was appointed at the Berliner Philharmoniker in 1999. I reckon that it could be one of either Gustavo Dudamel or Daniel Harding who both play regularly with the Berlin orchestra and I believe are well liked by the members of this self governing institution. There is also the unpredictable Christian Thielemann to consider but he is Sir Simon’s age. As I said earlier it’s a mystery.

True. Rattle and the family will stay in Berlin. He made that absolutely clear a week or so ago in an interview with Richard Morrison of The Times. He said it doesn't matter a jot.

I'm not sure they would choose Rattle though as IIRC the relationship between SR and the orchestra has not been of the warmest (though I can't recall where I have seen comments to this effect).

I don't see why this is even an issue. No one suggested that Gergiev would move to London when he was appointed to the LSO, so I don't see why we should expect Rattle to move.

Thanks for passing on what you have gleaned, Stan. Jessica Duchen article in today's iPaper (from yesterdays Indie). No great insights. I enjoyed the comment : "if the decision were left solely to the players, they would probably choose a person with a clear beat who lets them out of rehearsals early."
