Re the RFH and fiddling with its acoustic I thought that at one point the GLC installed some sort of acoustic treatment involving ceramic pots behind panelling in the hall, that were supposed to add warmth to the sound along the lines of the methods apparently used in ancient Greek auditoria. Anyone else remember this?

I'm going right off the new concert hall idea since reading about the iPads on every seat, above.

Richard, I'm not sure it is fair to call it moral posturing.
people can have honestly held beliefs, without necessarily being entirely consistent in their behaviour as consumers.(Not suggesting anything about gongers' behaviour as a consumer BTW).
In fact, it is probably(almost) unavoidable to behave in an inconsistent way in our complex consumer society.
Isn't it?I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.

(I wouldn't pay for the Times, but I do have SKY TV, although I have never paid more than half price for it, and I wouldn't.What a wonderfully sound moral position.)

I wasn't being entirely serious and if I was desperate to read it I would pay.
But back onto Simon and the vanity hall of mirrors (fantasy or otherwise)

I wouldn't be surprised if the new London concert hall is built, if only to conform to the law which states that if there is a choice between spending on some vast grandiose project the cost of which is greatly disproportionate to its benefit and spending the same money on many smaller projects benefiting far more people in the long run, it is always the grandiose project which is chosen. There are so many examples of the operation of this law: the appalling Millennium Dome, the London Olympics (and any Olympics for that matter), HS2, new devolved assembly buildings and - I regret to say - the new Birmingham Library (the old one was perfectly good).
There is nothing wrong with London's existing concert halls. If SR doesn't like them, let him stay away.

More here.
Sir Simon Rattle wants a brand new, acoustically perfect concert hall for London. But Michael Church watched him perform at the Barbican on Sunday and the sound was flawless
Plus a review.
Plus I learned a new word.
Pellucid.
i'm going to use that one.
