    RIP Phil Hutchinson

I was moved by a tribute paid yesterday morning by Martin Handley and Rob Cowan at the end of the Breakfast programme to Phil Hutchinson, a well-liked BBC studio manager who was killed in a car accident in Canada at the age of 30 last Saturday.

Both spoke warmly of his personality, helpfulness and love of classical music. Some had spoken of a starry career ahead of him at the BBC.

I think other Boarders may be touched by this news. Some of us have no doubt, unknowingly, had our pleasure at broadcast music enhanced by his skills.

It seems to me important that these boards could also honour the death of this young man who had so much to offer the world of classical music.

It's not often that such personal announcements are made about production staff, whom listeners are unlikely to have heard of. But one appreciates that such a sudden loss comes as a great shock to colleagues and friends. Condolences to all.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

According to the best estimates of astronomers there are at least one hundred billion galaxies in the observable universe.
