Not very keen I'm afraid to say. Leaves me quite cold.

Try the 4th symphony, which has an opening theme straight from the steppes, and the 5th, which just predates Rachmaninov's 1st and which, to my ears, influences it. I sometimes wonder if Glazunov was flattered or annoyed when he conducted the first performance of the latter.

If that doesn't work try the String Quintet and Quartets BBM

See if you can get a cheap second hand copy of the Rozhdestvensky coupling of those two symphonies.

Possibly, but it does not preclude the others.

I cannot decipher the second set of *s. Many words fit, none that make sense.

The complete set of Glazunov symphonies 1-8 by Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra of Moscow Radio under maestro Vladimir Fedoseyev on Brilliant Classics is outstanding value.

Although Fedoseyev was music director of the Vienna Symphony for a few years Fedoseyev is one of the under regarded Soviet conductors.

For Forumistas wishing to sample a complete Glazunov Symphony cycle, and who don't object to MP3 quality, there is a Fedoseyev set (possibly the same one that Stanf mentions, with the orchestra's previous name?) for £6.49:

At the same price, there's also a set from the BBCNOW under Tadaaki Otaka:

                          Both very good.
The Fedoseyev is a bit rough recording wise - but it has a dynamic quality which more than compensates. Also look out for Yondani Butt.
