When the Tink held the reins, I subscribed to a perception of him as the Dour Dutchman, a Kapellmeister being carried along by a great Orchestra. Now I realize how stupid that was. After seeing Haitink guest here many times I have completely done a 180 and realize that he must have done quite a bit to maintain the standards of the Orchestra. I've never been a Marris Jansons fan, however...

Alison, my post was half tongue-in-cheek as you know. Richard's post refers to The Tink maintaining standards within the orchestra. That's all very well and good. Any good kapellmeister can retain standards surely. There is also the small matter of the interpretative quality of the greatest of conductors. Sorry, for me, The Tink remains in the "everything in its right place, well thought out, well done" category. But that doesn't make the sparks. To me, anyway.

Try his latest release. I find the Strauss Don Juan unmatched for excitement. Sparks flying everywhere.

You may be drawing the wrong conclusion from a small sample of listening. Similar to me with Gatti I guess.

Strange but I've felt that Jansons got more out of BavRSO than the Conc!

I try to avoid Jansons recordings, but Critics that I've read have suggested the same think about his BRSO v. RCO experience.

It seems Uncle B will never go back to the Concertgebouw which is just daft. What a waste.
