Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra’s new Chief Conductor....

.....from 2016 will be Daniele Gatti.

"Daniele Gatti has been appointed the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra’s new chief conductor, a post he will assume in the 2016/2017 season.
Maestro Gatti will be the seventh chief conductor in the orchestra’s history. He will be succeeding Mariss Jansons, who will be leading the RCO in the capacity of chief conductor for the last time on 20 March 2015."

Uninspiring, and a definite comedown after Jansons.

Not been that impressed with concerts heard on the radio including Proms. A recent Mahler 7 with the LSO struck me as rather dull and unimaginative.

Perhaps a feeling that early promise with the RPO has not been wholly fulfilled.

On the other hand not an appointment to write off completely and I could easily imagine some half decent nights ahead.

I have a Blu Ray of Gatti conducting the RCO in Mahler 5 that is quite good. I also enjoyed some of the recordings made with the Royal Philharmonic before it became a salon orchestra.

A touch harsh - for example they are accompanying Argerich in the Schumann in switzerland this weekend.

Blimey! Talk about damning with faint praise!

I saw / heard Gatti piloting the Met Orchestra through the Kaufmann 'Parsifal' in NYC, and I can tell you it was brilliant, and they very seriously played for him. Not an easy band at all, but Gatti persuaded them.

I agree with DracoM that the Met Parsifal was brilliant. I only heard the radio relay but was highly impressed.

The Royal Concertgebouw would not have chosen Gatti if they had serious doubts about his suitability for the task.

As a taster for what we can expect here he is conducting the RCO in a Mahler 9 performance from August 2013: http://www.radio4.nl/luister-concert...r-9-bij-et-kco

This thread is in danger of degenerating into a Waldorf & Statler sketch ...

Waldorf: That was wonderful!Statler: Bravo!Waldorf: I loved it!Statler: Ah, it was great!Waldorf: Well, it was pretty good.Statler: Well, it wasn't bad...Wal...

I am beginning to get over my disappointment. I've heard he does a very good Mahler 6 and look forward to catching up with the Ninth when in the mood.

Agreed. Still, from this side of the pond, it looks like the RPO has fallen pretty far...

Best to wait & see ... or hear, I suppose.

In his 5yrs or so, Gatti has built the O N de France into a very well balanced and distinctive sounding orchestra of fine technical proficiency. They're on my 'must hear' list of Europe's best if/when they come near me. Gatti is a very fine partner for any soloist, vocal or instrumental - for that I would rate him with Chailly, Jurowski, Harding etc. I hope for an excellent working relationship with the orchestra, interesting programming, top flight soloists plus hand-picked spectacularly talented newcomers...

(Alison: How the new Music Director of the Concertgebouw conducted a couple of bits of Mahler once upon a time doesn't have much to do with it, does it?)

Has the RCO ever had an un-boring conductor since Van Beinum? It's the wonders of the orchestra itself that carries most conductors through.

                              [prepares defensive posture...]
