I can't speak for Middlesborough but I believe Middlesbrough is a town

I would like to see included in a season a string-orchestra-only prom (in the Albert Hall, not as a short chamber prom) - I don't really mind what they play though preferably not the Holberg Suite or RVW's Fantasia which both get frequent outings.

    ...... and a decent non-gimicky organ recital ...

            Alright then:

Birtwistle: The Mask of Orpheus complete, semi-staged, and broadcast on television, too.

            Late nighters:
            Ferneyhough: Carceri d'Invenzione complete cycle
Barrett: Opening of the Mouth (its London premiere, I believe)

            All-dayer:
            Dillon: Nine Rivers

            All-nighter:
            Feldman: For Philip Guston

and an all-night Raga event so that this generation of listeners can have the same wonderful experience as ours did back in the early '80s.

(There: bet you'd wished we'd stuck to Middlesbrough jokes, HS )

And a Bruckner Symphony cycle (all ten) running through the Season.

I would also like a prom that made use of the Albert Hall space. How about a recreation of St Mark's Venice, Gabrieli & Co., polychoral brass playing antiphonally from the gallery - probably a logistical nightmare but worth the effort I reckon.

                .
                YES YES YES

How about some La Monte Young ? all night, all day, all week aaaaaaaaaaaaah

WHERE is the electroacoustic music ?
One of the things that a circular space offers is tremendous diffusion possibilities (even WITH the acoustic)

I'm afraid that I concur with Richard Barrett (and Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt, for that matter) that the only justifiable fate for the Royal Albert Hall is demolition and for the reasons that he states; it's an appalling place in which to listen to almost anything.

Hmm, as long as we're on the topic...

Michael Finnissy: New work [Proms commission]
Peter Ablinger: New work [Proms commission]
--- interval featuring impromptu performance from FURT ---
Jakob Ullmann: New work [Proms commission]

And a Chris Dench symphony cycle running through the season >.>

2 versions of each and it would take all season. In a good way !!

Some great ideas there, I am sure.

Any road up north (or down south) to Middlesbrough........

I think a cycle of Henry Cowell symphonies would be rather nice.
                      Or some Henry Cowell works.
                      Any of them.
                      At all.

hands up, no googling, who can say to within a decade, when Cowell last had a piece performed at the Proms.

                      Anybody? No guesses?

No wonder. According to the Proms Archive it is NEVER.

                      Can this be true?
Incidentally, this is the same frequency of programming as Harry Partch.

Lou Harrison has done famously with his two outings, incidentally.
Whilst on the subject, next year marks 30 years since Roger Sessions had a piece played, the last of his 5 outings.

Perhaps he will be back in fashion by next year? Perhaps a William Schuman symphony to " Go with".... it will be 30 years since one of his symphonies last graced the RAH.

So here is my suggested programme for an all-French Promenade Concert, played by a visiting French Orchestra such as The Paris Orchestra or the French National Radio Orchestra:

Hector Berlioz: Ov. Les Franc Juges

                        Francis Poulenc: Organ concerto

                        Albert Rousssel: Symphony Nº 2

                        INTERVAL

                        Henri Dutilliex: Symphony Nº 2

Claude Debussy: Symphonic Suite "La Mer"

(possible encore: Saint Saens: Danse Macabre)
Yes, a long programme but it would redress what I consider to be an obvious neglect of our nearest neighbours' ouvres.

Grisey: Les Espaces Acoustiques, Ensemble Intercontemporaine, Diego Masson.

(Incidentally, my "nearest neighbours" are Dutch, Irish ... or Scots and Welsh if you prefer!)

Here's a French programme with a lot of emphasis on the winds:
                                Boieldieu: Le calife de Bagdad
                                Milhaud: Suite française
Hahn: Le bal de Béatrice d’Este
                                Poulenc: Concert champêtre

And I do know that Reynaldo Hahn was just an honorary Frenchman.
