This forum is a lot more civilized than any other Internet Forum that I have ever participated in. I think that the amount of stimulating new content has dipped in the last few weeks. From my standpoint on this side of the pond it is partly due to the Proms, because I tend to lose interest when the discussions revolve around Concerts that I can't hear or attend. And real Lives tend to intervene. My work is quite consuming, and a close family member is terminally Ill and that has taken precedence over more frivolous pursuits.

For this forum I think most of the people who hang around all day would be retired or otherwise in possession of lots of free time; I suspect I am the only one who meets the traditional stereotype of friendless attention seeker (due to a set of life circumstances I imagine people here won't be very sympathetic towards) but I try my best to treat everyone respectfully & with politeness.

I think you're overlooking those who use this and other websites/social media for information. I come here, visit Amazon, read the online newspapers etc as a means of finding out what is going on in the world of classical music: which CDs to buy/hear; which to avoid; which concerts to hear on the radio (which is why concert reviews are worth reading) or iplayer precisely because I have so little available free time. I want to make the most of what I have. This site (and others) helps me filter out the extraneous.

Of course, there are views expressed here that I respect more than others. Some people's tastes completely fail to synch with mine, while others coincide to an extraordinary degree. I don't see the need to cut myself off from a source of information that can be extremely useful just because of a few misfits. I can see that if you're a member of a music faculty, or a musician in a professional orchestra you wouldn't see the need to discuss music any further than you do already with your colleagues, but for the rest of us who are probably surrounded by philistines for much of the day (even if they are intelligent philistines!) this place's merits outweigh its irritations.

Just for interest I looked back at the number of posts that were made in each of the last three proms seasons. There were significantly more posts in 2011 than in either 2012 or 2013. However, in each year there were always a few concerts which attracted a high number of responses (typically the first night; a particular themed set of concerts (eg Barenboim's Beethoven (2012); The Ring (2013); and a number of specials (eg Der Freischutz) while a great many generated single figure responses.

You have my deepest sympathy, Richard. As one who is in the same position as yourself and who would willingly exchange places with my daughter, who will never know the years that I have lived through and enjoyed, I am well aware of the agony and even the feeling of guilt that it is her and not me who suffers.

My deepest sympathy to Richard and Hornspieler. I hope this forum gives you some, even very small comfort.

Never mind. I think one of the best things about this forum is that nobody needs to apologise for the level of their intelligence and knowledge. In short, this is a very good place to be in.
