I try my best with my alphabetical listen through 300 or so composers. I was surprised that there weren't any comments back after I suffered Mahler for a day a few days ago and posted on the usual What are You Listening to now thread. It is interesting to see which composers provoke a discussion and which don't, after listening to Frank Martin on Friday and posting, not a single comment, has anyone listened to any of his music recently?

I have been thinking the same but thought maybe it was just the summer holidays. I think another reason could be that I am less interested in some of the old threads because we've discussed them to death. Breakfast and Essential Classics are a write off to me. But agree with Suffolkcoastal about inflammatory threads at least the one about Gove but not Mahler....

As usual, an interesting post from Suffolkcoastal. As I do like Mahler, over the years I've gotten used to those who don't and therefore I don't react. Everyone has their likes and dislikes. As for Martin, to be honest I don't know his music which may be a fault but happy to live with it.

              Your mention of "suffering Mahler for a few days" is pricelessly wonderful! That is exactly what makes these boards the eclectic platform that it can be. But Frank Martin; I have one solitary CD of his work;

Concerto for 7 wind instruments, Percussion and Harp
              Studies for String Orchestra
              Erasmi monumentum

              LPO, Mathias Bamert

I need and now want to re-listen to it! I bought it on a whim about 3 years ago chez Gramex, not knowing anything of what was recorded therein. Many of my favourite purchases are thus made.

SC, I always read and am fascinated by your listening, your thoughts, opinions and descriptions of your musical odyssey. I rarely - if indeed, ever comment for the simple reason that I do not have the musical knowledge and background that many of our fellow-posters possess, so my contributions would be pretty pointless.

I suspect you are correct - see much the same elsewhere - however re these boards since I don't bother with R3 now until the evening concert I find it difficult to comment except in sadness at what to me was a great channel being deliberately destroyed - can't be bothered to give more than a cursory look at politics board as what can one say when all one can see in news is the horrendous destruction of innocents in the name of religion tho mostly it seems because of entrenched politics - even the techie board seems to have little going.

I'm sure with the imminent departure of the Dear Leader and the appointment of the new Commissar for Radio 3, things will get things going again. Anyone filled the Listener's Survey in yet? I've done so and laid it on pretty thick, I expect my comments will be deleted by the BBCs KGB and I'll get a knock at my door in the early hours.

I always enjoy reading your posts sc,and I make notes of the works you comment on (yes I still have that ever growing list from your symphonic journey days).
I must confess to never having knowingly heard a note of Frank Martin.

like VNM , I always read Suffy's A to Z posts and try, not always successfully, to pick a piece or two that is new to me to listen to.

Successful boards need to be about exchanges of information and opinion. This requires those who leave to be replaced by new blood, and that seems to be a bit of a problem.

Edit: Thought I would have a listen to a bit of Frank Martin. His Mass for Double choir has a healthy 25k youtube views, so somebody likes it !!

I'd be extremely disappointed if this board closed, not that this has been suggested, so there must be enduring pleasures aplenty which are perhaps easy to take for granted.

                            I do hope so!

A forum needs a bit of controversy every now and then. It can be very tedious when everybody agrees with everybody else. There aren't many posters who can ruffle a few feathers these days and we need them.

I used to enjoy occasionally pitching in to the Alphabet Association - shame it has died the death but I suppose there are only so many times to go from A-Z without running out of ideas. Equine necrofilia is pointless!!

Some of the Martin I listened to was new to me, including the Cello Concerto, I'm always fascinated to find out what others think of the pieces/composers, even after several weeks. Have we had a thread recently about pieces you've heard for the first time this week for example? I'm still surprised but what I don't know, Massenet to which I'll be listening in a few days I'm not very familiar with apart from the odd piece/extract and Mascagni, I've only ever heard Cav and a couple of arias from L'amoco fritz so that will be a voyage of discovery for me. Spotify and youtube have of course been priceless in all of this discovery, we really are in an enviable position these days so that even a lacklustre R3 doesn't impede musical discovery.

PS: The Martin Mass for Double Choir is absolutely gorgeous!
