Fortunately for me (or at least where tottering piles of CDs are concerned) I live on my own and suspect that the same is true for most posters to this thread? I'm afraid that tidiness doesn't really come into the equation much at all.

I'm not sure I can see the point in cataloguing everything on a database. The time taken to start this from scratch would be pretty pointless and besides I know what I have whether on shelves or floor. The only point in a catalogue would be for insurance purposes if a fire should destroy them. Apart from that life's too short.

Nope,every so often I have to clear the cds away.
This means simply putting them back on shelves where there is a gap.or in drawers.

I spotted uncle Bernard's RVW,but wasn't worried.

Life is too short to spill it on trying to find that particular work I want to listen to NOW.....
Now with my database fully up and running, it has cost me some 25 seconds per work to set up ( some 400 hours spread over 28 years, using copy and automatic filling-in devices, and I've passed a blind typewriting exam)

Not sure it is green? Just an effect of the shadow on the front.

It's one of the big French bargain EMI boxes which came out a few years ago, I think, but I can't see which from the lack of resolution.

The one poking out of the shelf? Looks like one of those French EMI L'Introuvables de ... boxes? Judging by its position in the alphabet, could it be Liszt? Our Cali? Surely some mistake!

My desire to shrink my collection of physical media using hard drives has largely been motivated by domestic/spousal concerns. My wife doesn't complain much about the piles of recordings, but as she is only slightly over 5 feet tall, I am afraid of losing her forever in one of the mounds.

Certainly is - another great value purchase, from a discount store in Berlin: they were knocking them out at about 8 quid a box. A number of people received the Ring cycle for Christmas that year!

No it's the Hickox 'Budd' with Langridge (I got rid of the Nagano)... and no, not PP (which EMI double did you mean? not that it matters - I don't own that one!)
