He likes RAH, though, but, with warmer summers a possibility, a slightly smaller Proms venue with all mod cons might be welcomed by some. I wonder how the old Queen's Hall managed the promming space, or did they just use fully portable arena seating in the winter, like RAH does?

The original architect of New Broadcasting House Sir Richard MacCormac died the other day and was remembered on Last Word. He resigned from the project when his design was changed for something cheaper.

The Beeb seem to have a habit in that respect. David Chipperfield parted company with them over their new HQ in Glasgow, when they changed the specifications for cheaper materials. I'm sure we all appreciate careful management of our money, but surely that should have been sorted out at the commisioning/design stage, and/or enough contingency funds set asside to allow for increses in materials costs.

As for demolishing Broadcasting House, there aren't that many good 1930s buildings so definitely not. If Neville Mariner wants a new concert hall perhaps it should be outside London - surely London has plenty already? - & King's Place was opened only a couple of years ago.

Why can't the Dome be used as a classical concert venue, amongst all it's multi-usage existence? Yeah - OK it as ugly as hell, but does that really matter, as it's almost a ready-for-use venue, and just far enough outside central London to be considered as having the potential for a huge catchment area?

Actually, London could do with a decent concert hall to match the Victoria Hall, Symphony Hall and The Sage
