Sun 27 March - Dvořák, String Quintet Op 97

    Sunday 27 March, 5pm-6.30pm

"The Skampa Quartet and viola player Garfield Jackson join Stephen Johnson in dissecting Dvořák's 'American' String Quintet Op 97. Along with his Symphony No 9 (From the New World) and the American String Quartet Op 96, the String Quintet was a work Dvořák wrote during the 3 years he spent in the USA. The programme was recorded at last year's Lake District Summer Music Festival in Kendal, and features extracts and complete performance of the String Quintet."

It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

This is a wonderful piece and greatly superior to the better-known quartet mentioned above.

Ah, I am not the only one who thinks the quintet op.97 is the "better" work compared with the quartet op.96

Encouraged by this thread, I got out Dvorak's Legends, which I've had for years (Brno State Phil/Pinkas) but never really discovered. Got them this time.

This is the piece, and the show, that finally brought me to take notice of a nagging desire to know classıcal music more serıously.

Thats not to say ım very far along, but at least started :-D

Great look at a great piece.
