I remember he was also a good sport when doing the New Year's Concert in Vienna, entering into the fun.

      Very sad news.
Another who seemed as if he would be around forever.
      Gorgeous Mahler 4 of course.

      RIP.

Yes, from 1980 (right after Boskovsky) to 1986, then subsequently 1994, 1999, and 2005.

Was he not due to conduct it again next year ?

Some autopilot performances of his , including that Bruckner last year, did not appeal but he could turn out wonderful stuff.

No, Zubin Mehta is scheduled for the 2015 New Year's Day Concert.

Goodness, what a shock. I must dig out the mini-disc of his opera '1984'.

                RIP, maestro.

And some of his Mahler, even Wagner... I have an old VHS of an incendiary Mahler 8 at the Proms - magnificent stuff.

                  RIP Maestro and thank you
                  Agreed. That is a shock.

He seemed to be fit to the end, keeping going with his music-making. I'm glad we saw him one more time a couple of years ago - Mahler 8 at RFH.

RIP Lorin - I hope all those who have said unkind words about him on these boards will now learn to enjoy his large 60+ year recorded legacy. I also hope there will be commercial recordings of his late expansive Richard Strauss.

The Ravel piano concertos (with Collard) are pretty special too; they won the 1980 Gramophone Award, according to the blurb on the CD liner.

PS: Just spotted mention of this in message 10!

A great sadness has come gain. So soon after Abbado as well! I have some Maazel recordings but I never have bought any of his recordings, especially later on in his life. apart from John Adams's On the Transmigration of Souls. Which I will play today!

There are plenty to enjoy but we cannot all suspend critical judgment simply on the basis that conductors, like all of us, are mortal surely ?

A fitting tribute, bbm (hope you don't mind edited quote!); I had forgotten this, but shall do likewise.

True, but at this time we can focus on the positive.
