Franz Josef Haydn and Sir Colin Davis

Well, LSO Live have recently released a, well, what looks like a stupendous set of Haydn's London Symphonies, although, iirc, not all of them I was thinking, therefore, would it be worth my while, or anybody's, that, if they already have the other set he recorded for Phillips, with the RCO, would it be worth my while acquiring this new set? Are there any differences to his interpretations? Also, not included in the LSO Live anthology.

Fruitless question(s) Bbm - you're going to buy them - you know you are! Just reach for the plastic, and enjoy!

(And then tell the rest of us how good they are. )

I can't believe they're anything but good. The Amsterdam recordings are wonderful, but knowing Davis's later stuff - where did he ever really go "off the boil"?

Odd that this web page doesn't show the Haydn symphonies - http://lso.co.uk/sir-colin-davis-recordings

THis page shows a recent CD - http://lso.co.uk/haydn-symphonies-no...nies-nos-97-99

One can sample here - http://open.spotify.com/track/5pTENYZufDGAWBRvLXNDzX

It's also possible to sample the recently released Colin Davis anthology from LSO Live - http://open.spotify.com/track/007JHJwU5GwMfo4hPzQ9vi
In the disc version it has SACDs of some of the recordings which were previously only available in CD or download/stream formats - the New World and the Symphonie Fantastique.

thanks for the links, Davce2002.It's just that I have no idea how to do these things!! :) Ferney, you are quite right!!

On another note, imo, Haydn better than Mozart!!

Sorry if there's a problem with the links. I went back to check, and normally on my machine the links go straight into Spotify. Now they seem to go to a front page - not what I intended. I'll check the links again - hope it's not a permanent "feature"!

Could be a "cookie" problem on my machine, though I'm not convinced. I have been trying to prevent almost all sites from tracking in the last week or so, and there could be an interaction - or lack of one - now.

The discs include Symphonies 92, 93, 97, 98 & 99 and it's just a pity that another one, 95 say, wasn't available to squeeze on to the second disc.

I have the Concertgebouw set and am more than happy with that but will almost certainly get this enticing set as well. Davis is peerless in this music.

I had just purchased the Amsterdam set this week. It is hard to imagine how they could be improved upon.
I did purchase some LSO Live Sibelius Symphonies and I preferred Davis earlier recordings of the same with the Boston SO.
One major difference was the sonics, with Phillips achieving much better results in the 1970s than the Later recordings.

Odd - might have been some sort of unknown glitch.

Seems to be working here, now, too.

I bought them last week. Very good indeed, IMHO, if perhaps not hitting the heights of the Concertgebouw recordings. The LSO play very well but their not really in the same league as the Dutch orchestra.

They did get a favourable mention on CD Review last Saturday, IIRC in the first half hour

It seems a pity that, if I'm not mistaken, Davis's recordings of the Paris symphonies (82-87) and nos. 88-92 with the Concertgebouw haven't been reissued in a Philips Duo set, as the London symphonies were. I've picked up one or two of these (nos 82 and 83, with no, 94 in a French Decca import, and no. 88, with no. 99 and Beethoven's 1st (BBC SO), on Pentatone), but it would be nice to have the Convertgebouw recordings of nos 82-92 in one set. I wonder if he recorded any of these with the LSO for future release (apart from no. 92, which we now have on LSO Live)?

I had not realised that Josef Haydn was actually Franz Josef Haydn. Like the emperor. Very interesting.
