    Prokofiev. "Must Have " CDs.

Its that time of year again.

I always seem to have a spell of Prokofiev listening during the summer. Not sure why.

Any old which way, I could do with some recommendations for must haves, classics, best evers, and so on.

Any music, in a perfect world single discs available at a sensible price.
There is so much available, just give me the best stuff.
    Cheers

    TS.

The Ancerl recording of Alexander Nevsky, amazon.co.uk ASIN: B0001NPU4C . Check out the marketplace for "New". O.k., Navarra is no Slava in the Symphony-Concerto, but he's not that bad either. Věra Soukupová is superb.

            Rozhdestvensky, Leningrad PO, Symphony 5 - http://www.amazon.com/Prokofiev-Symp.../dp/B000FI903U
This one is a BBC recording from the Proms.

He also recorded most/all of the symphonies on Melodiya with issues on LP by EMI.

Another good 5 might be the Ormandy one - such as Ormandy in Russia - http://open.spotify.com/track/0UN6phRy7uEtkhKFjlvqll

Unfortunately, all the really gripping performances of the 6th symphony (Mravinsky, Kitaenko with the Gurzenich Orchestra) seem to be unavailable or ludicrously priced. There is a used copy of the Mravinsky 6th available on Amazon Marketplace but I don't know what the transfer is like. The complete Rozhdestvensky symphony cycle (on re-mastered Melodiya) is available used for under £20, again on Amazon M/Place. I grew up with these performances on LP but I don't think that I could honestly describe them as, "must have". For the violin concertos, you could a lot worse than Kyung Wha-Chung, as in

                  Complete Symphonies... -

ROZHDESTVENSKY/MOSCOWRSO/MELODIYA 2010 - this sounds far better than earlier issues..

                  Or..

                  GURZENICH-ORCHESTER KOLN/KITAJENKO/PHOENIX EDITIONS 2008

So you have the gritty, earthy, occasionally too close or coarse and overblown, tell-it-how-it-is-in-Russia authenticity of Rozh in Moscow**, or the sonically-transfixing Orpheus-in-the-black-Rolls-Royce of Kitaj in Cologne . The sheer gorgeousness and power-in-reserve of the Kitaj is hard to resist, but should come with a Hi-Karate style warning, "be careful how you use it"... the dynamic range is scaaar-yy!

Buy both, you'd scarcely need another... (but I hear Karabits is up to something in Bournemouth...)

**listening to the 1st movement of the Rozh 4th in its longer, 1947 revision, I often think "metal machine music" (with of course)... The Prodigal Son on The Steel Step, as it were...

Agree fully about the 'Nevsky'. The edition I have is c/w the Stravinsky 'Rite' which, in my view, probably justifies the extra cost (not knowing the Navarra Symphony-Concerto).

Re msg 6, Previn with the LSO is good in 5 and also 7 - but currently seems pricey on EMI - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Prokofiev-Sy...evin+prokofiev I have these on tape. I really like 7.

Wouldn't want to be without the Nicolai Malko 1&7 with the delicious suite from The Love of Three Oranges

One of my first classical tapes worn to bits and replaced by CD.

I have the Rite in combination with Pertushka, on an Ancerl 'Gold' transfer.

Freddy Kempf in Prokofiev Piano Concertos on BIS- an extraordinarily beautiful performance of the Second Concerto in particular.

Efrem Kurtz in the Classical Symphony on an old CfP record coupled with the Shostakovich 1 but second hand copies of the 2CD Profile set are available coupled with some Russian relative rarities .

Chung in the Violin Concertos and a player I am generally wary of Maisky in the Sinfonia Concertante on DG.
