Hans Heinrich XIV, Graf Bolko von Hochberg

I decided to investigate this composer mentioned by PG Tipps in another place. Unfortunately Google is very uniluminating - not even a mention in Wikipedia (https://www.google.co.uk/#q=Hans+Heinrich+XIV), and all the references would appear to be in German (& a very intriguing note at the bottom of the page - "Some results may have been removed under data protection law in Europe" - which I don't think I've ever seen before). Perhaps PG could give a bit of background, or some links to music on the web? Or one of the German-reading members?

Hi again Flosshilde, I'm delighted to have met up with you again so swiftly and to be able to provide some assistance!

Yes Hans Heinrich was a somewhat obscure German composer so, sadly, many of the references will inevitable be in his native language ...

Do you use the excellent Chrome Browser? It's very fast and efficient and has an excellent translation facility box which is clearly visible at the top right hand side. If you don't use Chrome, I would strongly recommend you download and install it and you'll find a foreign language website is no great barrier to comprehension of the information provided.

Actually I've found quite a few mentions of HH hrough the Google engine but maybe some of your search results are as surprisingly negative as appeared to be the case for members in another place?

    Good Luck!

Obviously now due for a 'Your first...' or 'Your favourite...' thread...

Perhaps you would care to contribute, PG? Give a little background, explain why you enjoy his music (if you do) or why you dislike it if not?

Born 23/01/1843 in Fürstenstein in Silesia, died 1/12/1926 in Salzbrunn. Composer and musical director.
Resigned form his opera post in Berlin in 1902 following problems with the production Richard Strauss' Feuersnot in Berlin. Contracted conducors like Muck, Richard Strauss, Mahler and weingartner, and planned the first integral production of Wagner's Ring in Berlin.

Composed a couple of operas (Claudine von Villa bella 1864; Die Falkensteiner 1876; Der Wärwolff 1881), 3 symphonies (1879, 1892, 1910?), a piano concerto (1906) string quartets (1874 and 1894, the latter beginning in D and ending in a !), piano trios (1899 and 1904) and smaller works, most for piano, a couple of choral works, some 50 Lieder.
His style is -though late 19c/early 20c- still orientated on the Vienna classics (Beethoven and Schubert most apparently), enriched with slightly more "modern" harmonies.
Apart from some of his songs recordings of these works have not been made.

Most information re von Hochberg is to be found in MGG2 Pers.Teil Bd.9 and in documentation about Richard Strauss

According to Grove, he wrote 3 symphonies, a piano concerto, 3 string quartets, a piano quartet, 2 piano trios, a Singspiel, a Romantic opera ... but he had a busy life doing other things. He used the pseudonym J.H. Franz.

It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.
