Antony Hopkins - Happy Birthday!

Alas, I can remember none of the subjects AH talked about in that beautiful voice of his, apart from one where he delved, not into a particular work but into the essence of music itself.

Who can recall his humorous articie in Musical Times (ca. 1954), where he described serial music? To demonstrate the technique he used the letters H U R F I D L A M S T O H as his tone row.

How come that something so slight as this remains in the memory when more important things have disappeared?

Somebody already did on the What are you listening to Thread, but the comment seemed to get lost amongst the "congratulations" to JSBach and Mussorgsky, both of whom share the date (21st Mar).

I went to a talk and recital AH gave in public nearly forty years ago, though it was not recorded or broadcast. I remember he played the Bach-Busoni Chaconne beautifully, something which impressed me hugely. He said that pianists had been jealous of such a wonderful piece being composed for a mere violin and had taken steps to acquire it.

I also remember that at the beginning he measured the capacity of his audience to understand music by referring to Debussy's musical tribute to his mother and listening to the reaction of his listeners. I am glad to say there was a considerable guffaw.

Certainly I wish him, a man who lit up my youthful listening, a belated happy birthday.

90??? I can hardly believe he's 90!!! He sounds much younger to me :) I love his shows and I hope he will stay on R3 for years and years to come. Happy Birthday!
