Sad news, another who seems to have been around for as long as I've been listening to music.
    RIP.

One of my favourite discs is his recording of Mendelssohn's complete Midsummer Night's Dream music - magical.

Several US orchestras have put up tribute pages to RFdB, such as:

        The Philadelphia Orchestra: http://www.philorch.org/blog/news/ce...beck-de-burgos

        Boston Symphony Orchestra: http://www.bso.org/brands/bso/featur...de-burgos.aspx

The Saint Louis Symphony had some short blogs posts about him, one on the day that he announced formally his retirement just last week:

And this very short post after his death that mentioned his last concert there: http://www.stlsymphony.org/blog/inde...eck-de-burgos/

This is all the more striking when you realize that RFdB did not have a formalized position (e.g. principal guest conductor) with any of these 3 orchestras. He had a short "artistic advisor"-like affiliation with the Cincinnati Symphony in the interregnum between Paavo Jarvi and Louis Langree.

So, yet again the reminder that as it comes to others, so it will come to me. I had no idea whether he was alive or dead, but I treasure his recordings, particularly 'Carmen' with Grace Bumbry, Jon Vickers and Mirella Freni. Phew, what a cast! Be at peace, RFdB.

Sad news indeed although he did look rather poorly recently. I recall vividly his exciting 'live' performance (with Philharmonia at RFH I think) of Carmina Burana and Rite of Spring (his head seemed to be dull purple for a lot of the performance)

On CD I'd praise his Carmen and his was the first recording of Mozart Requiem that I heard and which I listened to endlessly on cassette Walkman walking to and from Land's End during a Summer holiday.

            Many thanks, Maestro

I remember two smashing concerts from the mid 70's when he brought the Montreal orchestra to Edinburgh (pre Dutoit days). We'd* only bought tickets for the first evening but went immediately to buy for the second night.

              (* Is now a well-respected international conductor.)
