I have the Pacifica set, but no others, so cannot make comparisons. Tbh, I haven't listened to it for a while, but I remember them as very well played and recorded, warmly romantic, vibrato-intense, quite colourful performances - perhaps missing a little of the quicksilver quality I associate with FM, but most enjoyable.

Yes, indeed. I'm working my way through the Haydn piano Trios by the 'Trio 1790' on CPO that I bought recently. The Mendelssohn would be a good follow-up listen.

My understanding is that it's c. £18 for the whole lot (£13 for downloads)....!!

Op 13 in A (?minor, but starts and ends in major) a personal favourite. Recently listened to Op 12 in E flat major, the finale of which veers rather interestingly between minor and major, eventually ending in .... I have Pacifica and like it.

Yes, I was thinking of the price for downloads. I was hoping to get out at under a tenner for 1-6, hard-copy

Gurnemanz' Cherubini recommendation on EMI is a front-runner, at the moment.

The Pacifica gets good notices on the web.

                I'd be interested to know.

I'm more interested in the music, than this or that CD release (sometimes these threads get a bit like a CD review magazine, rather than a music forum!). But of course discussion of the CD releases that are available is helpful - so both please
I'd have to listen to my discs again to remind me. Might be a good project for the next couple of days.

No regrets with this one - probably some overlap wit gurnemanz's set.

This led my mind to wonder about other classical period masters, and the much ignored (by me and this forum, it seems) Mendelssohn came to mind.

Having a blind-spot here, and owning no recordings of Mendelssohn quartets, I was wondering about the views of other forumites about M's quartets in general, and a recommended place to start, in particular.
Not completely ignored by some forumites,we've been here before Beefmeister.

The Herschell complete set of the quartets is brilliant,it's as if this music is their blood.
There is also the much hailed Brilliant Classics box of the complete chamber music.
I also have the Naxos discs of the Cello Sonatas,Piano Trios,Piano Quartets,String Quintets and the lovely Sextet for Piano and Strings, all highly recommendable.
Mendelssohn's chamber music,a gift to cherish.
Op 80,as good as anything the guvnor wrote pre Op 127,BUT ONLY IMVHO.

Seriously - might be worth combining the Mendelssohn SQ threads? I think it's a good idea!
