A tranquil farewell to 2018, a Happy New Year to you, ferney, and a vote of thanks for your faithful prompts to listen to the gospel of Johann Sebastian.

Overture in C major, BWV 1066

Otherwise called the First of the Orchestral Suites - well, in this performance from four years ago, that's easier to say than "hexadectet". Shunske Sato directs.

Such a beautiful gentle work played tenderly by Bart Jacobs (he of the famous hole in sock - repaired this time).
I keep listening to it, and it's not difficult to imagine Glenn Gould relishing in it.

Toccata in E minor, BWV 914

I can't remember ever having heard this work before.

Bart Jacobs recorded this performance at his home in Eikevliet in Belgium a couple of years ago. (On 23rd March to be precise - surely time to take down the Valentine's Day card left on the window ledge behind him!)

This was a beautifully relaxed performance, even Romantic chamber music in a way - it appealed to me. Never mind Valentines to Papa, did you see the hare lolloping along in full sight below the window? (Just at the start of movement 2 if you didn't) And the prawns with lemon juice?

Regarding the Orchestral Suite, above. I was not familiar with that one at all, though I have long loved Nos 2 and 3. A shame Bach never took to this form. Thankfully the Cantatas provide great orchestral music, and when I saw there was a double bass in No 1, I half hoped to see the wonderful flame-haired Maggie Urquarht in situ. She caught my eye in Cantata Nun Komm , Bwv 59 (I think)

                No! BWV 61

Informal Bach? Charles Daniels paints a cosy picture of the Bach family making music, with special mention of 'young Bach persons' contributing. Marvellous ensemble.

Cantata, "Was Gott tut, das ist wohlgetan", BWV 100

"Everything that God does is done well" - a performance from (almost exactly) four years ago, and which first appeared on AoB in January, 2016. Recorded in Naarden Great Church, the Netherlands Bach Society was conducted by Jos van Veldhoven. A joyful work given a suitably spirited performance here.

Not least by the unmistakable Maggie Urquart.
