Cantata BWV 119: "Preise, Jerusalem, den Herrn"

"Praise the Lord, Jerusalem!" A 25-minute Cantata originally written for a church service for the Town Council in Leipzig - and Bach responds with suitably extravagant, public forces, including an orchestra requiring four trumpets. Here the work is given a suitably exuberant performance by thirty-six members of the Netherlands Bach Society Choir & Orchestra, conducted by Peter Dijkstra -

Third "English" Suite in G minor, BWV 808

Played with admirable vigour (but with tenderness in the Allemande and powerful dignity in the Sarabande) by French harpsichordist, Pierre Hantai in the Bartolotti House, Amsterdam.

I love these English Suites. There's always an outstanding piece to be picked out - maybe a gavotte or a gigue - you have selected the sarabande in this case. Next time it could be a different number. I listen to them quite randomly now. Once I played my way through the Fourth Suite and it was the prelude that I practised. I regret that I have given up entirely whatever little skill I had but the shapes and patterns remain in my head if not my fingers and I appreciate that.

Thanks, Padraig. The French and English Suites are (with much of the organ Music) the works of Bach that I know least, and one of my New Year's Resolutions was to get to know these works better. My own keyboard skills are fathoms below those required to do the works any kind of justice, so it is with the "scores" and recorded performances that I'm getting those shapes and patterns into my own captivated noodle.
