Prelude & Fugue in c# minor, BWV 849

The fourth couple in the first book of The Well-Tempered Clavier, given a performance by Bertrand Cuiller that reveals the literally wonderful simultaneity of passion and detachment of this literally marvellous Music. Literally splendid!

BWV599: Nun komm der Heiden Heiland

The ever-reliable Dorien Schouten performs this minute-long gem without a shred of of hesitation, deviation, and very little repetition! Putting the "extra" into "extraordinary":

              .

... in these politically-correct days are we still allowed to refer to "the heathen"?

How can so few seconds of music lead to so much good feeling.

Is anyone offended by the word? Personally, I feel that I am, at heart, a heathen - I have a heathen bosom.

Does that come from too much roaming around the Yorkshire moors in a Heath(en)cliff sort of way?

One of Bach's Motets this week - the optimistic and upbeat Funeral Motet Fürchte dich nicht, ich bin bei dir BWV228. The performance, recorded in Naarden's Great Church and conducted by Stephan MacLeod, is a bit smooth and "routine" for me - but still good to hear it again.

Incidentally, the list of performers includes a credit for Fred Jacobs playing Theorbo. Can anyone see/hear it?

Many thanks ferney for a note of sanity (well several notes actually) in this mad world.

My personal prejudice was kept satisfied with a line up of gorgeous females in the choir. Unisex sections are fine with me, but I'm uncomfortable with implications of female exclusion, even if it is a 500 year odd tradition.

Our local Oxfam shop has (or maybe had), the Brilliant Classic complete Bach set for £20 in their window. Was tempted but I have the Brilliant complete Vivaldi and haven't listened since I bought it!
