Cantata BWV 34; "O Ewiges Feuer"

"Oh eternal fire, oh source of Love" - Bach does the Bangles!

(Sorry - I went all "Clemmie" there )

For some reason, the AoB essaylette accompanying the performance spends more time hypothesising about the wedding cantata (BWV 34a) from which this Cantata originates than it does on what is actually performed! (Anyone would think that there was some celebrity wedding happening this weekend or something.)

No matter, as always, the performance of this gorgeous 17 minute work more than makes up for all the deficiencies of the "programme notes". Jos van Veldhoven leads the Netherlands Bach Society forces in a performance given in Amsterdam's Walloon Church a year and a week ago.

Another lovely cantata this Friday morning (apparently for a wedding or Whitsuntide).
        - the Whitsun version is what's performed here; appropriately enough as Sunday is Whitsunday. (Something mentioned in van Veldhoven's accompanying talk - but even he spends a bit of time talking about the Wedding version!)

I confess I'd forgotten about the wedding. No, really. Apologies for the overlap.

            - no need for the "apologies", Jim: I think of it as a "confirmation" rather than an "overlap"

                The Philip Larkin Cantata?

Everything in order - the imperturbable Lucia Swarts in control!

Fantasia & Fugue in a minor, BWV

Recorded in February of last year by Francesco Corti in the now-familiar Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ in Amsterdam.

                    A new work to me.

Funnily enough I was listening to Sokolov in BWV 904 only yesterday

Nice place, isn't it - but I couldn't help wondering how many people crack their skulls on the bookcase immediately above the settee?
