Just "bumping" this Thread as it's only just occurred to me that it's not been mentioned recently. Anyone still following it?

Fantasy in G major for Organ BWV 572 to get things restarted:

I wonder what's in store for Christmas day.

I rarely posted (I play a Bach Cantata every morning, so I had to jiggle the "Friday" slot around) but always followed the Thread, Edgey: and with over 5000 followers, I think the "passive" interest was always there. Let's keep it going for 2016.

After listening to the Magnificat sung to a deadly dull Anglican chant by Hopkins from Bishop Benson's 1880 'Nine Lessons with Carols' (the Victorian Truronians liked that sort of thing), I had to make a bee-line for Bach's life-enhancing masterwork on the same passage from Luke Ch.1. The additional material here on BWV 243 is well worth investigating.

Still following this website which I look forward to every Friday. Particularly enjoyed last weeks Cantata BWV100 (Was Gott tut, das ist wohlgetan) which I didn't know before. Also enjoyed a recent performance of the Violin Concerto in E. Lots of subtle phrasing from Shunske Sato I felt.

                  Thanks Ferney,I'm still here

These small pieces say so much in so little time I think.
You wouldn't think BWV 736 was about death if you didn't know the title.
Bach's organ music is becoming increasingly important to me.

                    - and especially for your last sentence. For years, I've hated the physical sound of the organ and have had to make do with reading the score (my "imagined organ" - stop sniggering on the back row! - never bothered me). Then things changed just over a year ago, and I'm catching up - thanks mainly to this "All of Bach" site, and the rather wonderful Mr Bowyer

The G minor Prelude & Fugue from Book 1, in case anyone was looking forward to a four-hour listening marathon!

Wow! I had no idea that this site existed, Rob! Fantastic explanation/analysis - I wish such a resource had been available forty years ago!

Same here. Over the past 3 or 4 of years perhaps.

The recordings that flipped the switch for me were

                            Margaret Phillips in Paris,

Stefano Molardi on various machines in Germany and latterly,

Robert Quinney at Trinity College, Cambridge

A problem for me was that organs come in all shapes and sizes (still sniggering at the back?! ) and they and their recordings range from the ghastly to the perfect (bit like harpsichords) - it's easy to be put off by encountering the dodgy end of the market...

Those analytical sites are great, Rob
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                            Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."
