I'm happy, ( because of my sense of entitlement) to move seats, but, for instance , I would ensure never to do this in a way which impacts negatively on somebody else.

The concert halls actually benefit , IMO, from seat movers, since there must be folks who book a cheap seat knowing that moving is a likely option, but who wouldn't buy a seat at all otherwise.

I wonder if there's ever been a case of someone moving to a cheaper seat (for whatever reason) and being asked to move back

Just over a year ago, I attended concert at the RFH, Takemitsu/Ligeti, BBCSSO.

ticket prices were standard RFH. I took up a Time Out offer of mid price tickets for £10 , which seemed, ( and was) a good deal.
on the night, the RFH were selling any ticket still available for, (IIRC) £5 each, at any rate cheaper than I paid, and WAY under what some folks paid for top price seats.

I moved to sit next to another forumite into some empty front stalls seats, which were selling on the night for £5.

        Not really an issue, IMO.

I wonder if any halls instruct their ushers one way or the other on this issue; perhaps there are one or two very officious ushers around and others who turn a blind eye.

Of course they do. And what does "very officious" mean in this context - asking a "customer" to kindly remain in the seat purchased by or allocated to them is hardly being officious, is it?

In practice, stewards are there to help. If you ask during the interval if you may move to a reasonably nearby empty seat with a less resticted view (or 'nicer' neighbours), you will most often have no problem at all.

usually easy enough, if there are empty seats in the same section, in my experience.
they tend to be very strict on climbing over barriers into the next section.

Toilet roll throwing is very much frowned upon these days too.

be great to see Rattle getting a ticker tape welcome on Saturday night !!

well at Southampton I would say that in general , at games where you have say, 80% capacity attendance, ( such as when we were in the Championship), the more expensive seats tend to be the better occupied areas.
However, in the Kingsland Stand, for example, there are at least 3 different price brackets, and no barrier to cross, so it would be easy enough to move to an area of empty and more expensive seats at half time and you would be unlikely to be stopped by the stewards.

As many fans used to , we have certainly moved from one end to the other to be at the end Saints were supposed to be attacking.

                        .

I have a vague memory of hearing about some cinemas installing moving seats for a disaster film about earthquakes. At appropriate times the seats shook.

That's interesting: I was merely wondering if anyone had had encountered ushers who go "over the top", as well as the more reasonable kind. I'm happy to settle for "efficient" rather than "officious". Thanks for "efficiently" putting me right.
