I can't say that this is much of a surprise. While Janson's continuing health problems are regrettable it was becoming difficult to book any of his concerts with the confidence that he would turn up and his resignation was inevitable. I see that he is to continue at the Bavarian Radio SO but it will be very interesting to see to whom the Concertgebouw will turn next.

The conductor's musical chairs is very active lately!

The years at the helm at the principal conductor's post in Amsterdam decreased the last couple of years.

The couple of times Rattle conducted the Concertgebouw (In Amsterdam Mahler/Cooke 10 was premiered by him IIRC !) were not the happiest of either. Rattle/RCO is a difficult one.

When Jansons was appointed to the Pittsburgh SO in the late 1990s, he had just had a massive heart attack and had just undergone the implantation of an automatic defibrillator. I am amazed that he has been been able to keep the pace of a superstar jet setting conductor for these last 15 years.

There's this throwaway comment at the start:

It's actually good, in terms of "taking one for the team", that he doesn't want another potential Eduard van Beinum shocker to be the way to go. So the orchestra has time to get going on choosing their next chief conductor, albeit much less time compared to Berlin. But then Berlin hasn't been fast on the decision either, so this might force the BPO's hand to decide quickly on their next chief conductor.

Because Andris Nelsons is about to take over in Boston and give up the CBSO, and also with his well known disdain for air travel, it would seem unlikely that AN would be the next in line at the KCO. However, because he is a young-un, that can be well into the future. I'm certainly hoping that either the KCO or the BPO take up the cause with Vladimir Jurowski, if they want to go with someone from the younger generation.

With respect to Ivan Fischer, he does have the Konzerthausorchester Berlin in addition to the Budapest Festival Orchestra. He is also music director of the Konzerthaus, so he obviously has a hand in programming there besides with the orchestra. The question is whether he would cut back there if he got the KCO offer.
