Roger Wright leaving
I see that Roger Wright is leaving his role as controller of Radio 3 in September to become the CEO of the Aldeburgh Festival.

Recruitment for his successor will begin in due course, but let's hope whoever takes over doesn't follow down the same path set by Wright, but instead takes time to think about what is distinctive about Radio 3."I do not approve of anything that tampers with natural ignorance. Ignorance is like a delicate exotic fruit; touch it and the bloom is gone. The whole theory of modern education is radically unsound. Fortunately in England, at any rate, education produces no effect whatsoever. If it did, it would prove a serious danger to the upper classes, and probably lead to acts of violence in Grosvenor Square."

I hope that at least some of the damage done to R3 by RW is reversible, and just wish he was going somewhere that didn't concern me. Surely the Falklands need an artistic director? Obviously nobody at AM listens to Radio 3. Presumably next year's programme is largely booked already? After that....

I think that the immediate fate of Radio 3 is very much in the hands of Tony Hall. He has such a bias in favour of music and arts programming that, for now, changes may be relatively limited. But if Tony Hall were to emulate George Entwistle (i.e., totally f*** up and depart early), then anything could happen to BBC classical music and arts!

Or rather, I just got as far as, What next for Radio 3?It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.
