    Top Ten JS Bach Cantatas

Been listening to a fair bit of 'earlier' music in the last week. Really been enjoying JSB's Cantatas.

    I haven't got many of them just 15, 30, 39, 51, 69, 73, 93, 105, 107, 131, 140, 191, 208, 211 & 212.

I can't get to a top ten, I'm not familiar with enough of them but my favourites so far, in order of preference are:

BWV 51 - Failoni Chamber Orchestra Budapest, Mátyás Antal

BWV 140 - Concentus Musicus Wien, Nikolaus Harnonkourt

BWV 69 - Bach Collegium Japan, Masaaki Suzuki

BWV 211 - Failoni Chamber Orchestra Budapest, Mátyás Antal

BWV 131 - Collegium Ghent, Philippe Herreweghe

Interesting but with such riches, quite impossible to choose 10.

Though I tend to listen more to the secular ones (BWV 201- 218, including the attributed ones as well as the only Italian one BWV 209)) making a choice is a near-impossibillity.

I had tried to start a similar thread a bit back, asking which were the essential ones to collect, and the consensus then was "All of them..."

Can't do a Top 10 but 82 would be in it if I could!

And despite HIPP I think it would have to be Hans Hotter...
I keep hitting the Escape key, but I'm still here!

Start with the Christmas Oratorio. That way you can tick off 6 in one go.

How many do you know? I have only knowingly heard 15 and can rank just 5.

Then it should be easy to rank them

I've got that, it's brilliant! I didn't realise that oratorios counted as cantatas. Why isn't it called a Christmas Cantata? And what about a Coffee Oratorio?
