I might have missed an earlier mention of it, but just in case, thought I'd point out that the Edding Quartet has come out with the first recording of Beethoven's String Quartet Op. 130/133 on period instruments, on the Phi label. Would be very curious to hear what people think of it. I won't be giving away any spoilers. >_>

Interesting new CD of Brahms and Tchaikovsky from the Atrium Quartet, always trying interesting things, and nice people to boot.

I was in HMV today and in the Classical section saw a 3CD set entitled the Mozart Singles Collection - don't remember him competing in the charts over the years - with the exception of the Waldo de Los Rios hit or perhaps Eine Kleine as part of the Classics on 45 segued selection.

Yes, I'm tempted - but wondering how it compares with my trusty old Biljsma/OAE/Leonhardt recording.

Mussorgsky on a period piano! I heard this on France Musique yesterday and was captivated by the sound:

The extracts I heard were very nice, ferney...I loved the acoustic and it was recorded on an 1875 Russian piano. If you go to the Amazon site, you should be able to hear some extracts. This lady has done some other nice recordings for ZigZag on period pianos, sometimes with Jos Van Immerseel.

I see that Parnassus have brought out a disc of Sviatoslav Richter playing Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier live, and BOTH books this time: up till now I've only been aware of Book One being available in a live version, a treasurable release from the doomed Revelation label years ago. I'd really like to hear Book Two (what I've heard of the studio version he made is, in my view, a little plain and didactic) played live with, one hopes, the same involvement and imaginative intensity as he achieves in Bk 1.

BUT: it's a DVD-A. What's that, please, and can I play it on my hi fi system?

It depends on whether it is a hybrid DVD-A. If it is, it will have a DVD video layer which will play on any standard DVD player. If the stereo audio output from such a player is fed to your hi-fi. All should be well.

Just having a listen to the new recording of Schubert Quartet no 15 by the Doric Quartet.

It is released later this month, but available to hear now in the Naxos library.

One of my first discoveries on Qobuz HiFi, I soon bought the CD itself... sharply articulated, muscular, dramatic performances. AF-C, finding it all too relentless, was too hard on it in the Gramophone; from brief excerpts of his comments I caught before the BaL on Bruckner 3 I think RR's AM liked it rather more...

A great listen anyway, from the HIFi and the musical perspective. The sound really is outstanding in its warmth, presence, definitional immediacy and dynamism.
