Fortunately no Watney's monstrosity here . Another new release to conjure with a Mozart and Wagner CD from the Halle/Barbirolli in Testament . Rather primitive BBC mono sound but cracking performances especially the Wagner - Barbirolli was a great opera conductor and only at the very end of his life did he have the chance to make recordings . There seems to be two different accounts re whether he was going to record Meistersingers for EMI . In the notes to this release it says he turned it down due to the suppression of the Prague Spring but I think I have read elsewhere that he died before the planned sessions .
Terrific singing by the Finnish soprano Anita Valkki and tremendously dramatic and supportive rather than grandiose conducting from Barbirolli both in the Immolation scene and the accompanying orchestral excerpts . I found myself wishing we also had the partnership in the Liebestod.
The Mozart is good too especially the finale although the Andante is a bit of a trudge .
I agree - any E Kleiber fan is likely to have some of these so a budget price needed to cover duplicates. I've thought also that recently the asking price of Amazon's direct prices have been high - probably they make more profit from sellers using their pitch!
