Now, how about this first time on CD Minneapolis/Dorati Eroica?

Don't know it, so it'll be interesting to hear. Speaking of third symphonies, I'm really pleased to see the Dorati Copland 3 in this box. Good to see more Paray in there too, and some worthwhile Fennell things.

Really looking forward to this one:

Sir Andrew Davis has long been a very fine Ives conductor. I do hope there will be a 3 and 4 (the latter replete with theremin in the final movement) to follow.

Pleased to see that Chailly has done the two Brahms Serenades with the Gewandhaus... until I saw the woeful cover. Riccardo looking very grim in a grey suit. C'mon Ricky, it's the Serenades, Springlike Charm & Warmth, Larks, Rabbits... you know....!

A superb disc and a worthy addition to Chailly's Brahms cycle.

Yes, I had something like the same thought when I saw the cover.

With all this negativity I'll HAVE to go and get it now, just when I'm trying to economise... so much for etc...AND it's overpriced for 16-bit.

Bet you ANYTHING YOU LIKE it turns out to be musically gorgeous... you'll have to give me time though.

Maybe Lamb Chop & Shari Lewis could go on the cover in JRiver.

BTW, Mackerras/SCO IS a great recording, just the reviewers who got it VERY wrong.

I'm looking forward very much to hearing Chailly's Serenades. If they're on the same level as the Symphonies they will be something to get excited about. (But that austere cover photo is an odd choice!). The short bits I've heard suggest quite a Kertesz-like approach.

My own favourite is indeed Mackerras/SCO, which is a marvellous record - bucolic and genial at the same time as being wonderfully energized. There are lovely things in Boult (and a few oddities), and Kertesz manages to be neat-and-tidy as well as full of rhythmic life. But I can never hear enough of these pieces (especially Op. 16), and to hear them played by the Gewandhaus Orchestra and Chailly on their current form promises to be a treat. Fingers crossed!

Two mouth-watering releases to look forward to:

Beethoven: Symphony No. 6 & Egmont Overture. LPO: LPO0085. Buy CD or download online. London Philharmonic Orchestra, Klaus Tennstedt

Thanks Pet, I hadn't seen those two.

The Missa Solemnis is a splendid addition to Bernard Haitink's discography.

And any new Tennstedt disc is an event - I always thought Klaus conducted a flipping good overture! I can imagine Egmont being really exciting!

Haitink put off performing the Missa Solemnis for many years and I remember a thrilling account with the Philharmonia back in 1984 which I once had on tape. There was also a highly memorable Prom performance in 1997 which I attended. It's wonderful to have his interpretation finally committed to disc.

There can't be very many more Tennstedt LPO performances left to be re-issued so this one is a cause for rejoicing. Incidentally, the Egmont Overture appeared on a BBC Legends CD that included the Beethoven 1 & 5 and Weber Oberon Overture.

Not strictly speaking a new release but rather a re-release of an elusive set, much admired by JLW I seem to remember. Worth it at this price for the performance of the 6th Symphony alone.
