In stead of 1000 we now have only 999 recordings of Bruckner 4. Really a tragedy.

Diffiicult to say. Maybe Barbs meant that it was a Barbirolli performance which was not retained?

Obviously so Dave - if Roehre doesn't think a Barbirolli Bruckner 4 was likely to be worth hearing then that is his problem .

I haven't an opinion whether that performance was worth hearing.
I don't think a Barbirolli Bruckner 4 which hasn't been recorded for whatever reason is a tragedy.
It may be a loss, perhaps a great loss, but that is as far as it goes.

Ah, so we're "arguing" about the meaning of words. I have heard other Bruckner recorded performances by Barbirolli which are indeed very good. The eighth, for example. I'm not sure how many Barbirolli Bruckner perfornaces have been captured for posterity.

It is sad if there was a discarded opportunity to retain a memory of a good, possibly great, performance.

Rave reviews for both the Mahler and Brahms discs in BBCMM today - makes the loss of the Bruckner seem even more likely to have been a musical tragedy !

Me too. Much more important than yet another Bruckner or Mahler!

The classic account of Rubbra 6 is of course Del Mar with the Philharmonia on Lyrita. I shall be fascinated to hear this Barbirolli live version.

Maybe not much more important than yet more Bruckner or Mahler, but a refreshing change for us British music lovers.

It's high time to get another Rubbra cycle recorded (Elder? Runnicles?). The last complete one is now around 20 years. (But I think a Wordsworth cycle or an Arthur Butterworth one would even be preferable, not one single being recorded sofar)

Just a warning that the sound on that Rubbra 6 is pretty primitive live mono but far from unlistenable

A nice shiny new box of the complete Havergal Brian Symphonies would be.....nice.

A new intégrale of the wonderful Duphly harpsichord works, from Pieter Jan-Belder for a great price on Brilliant Classics. But how does it shape up to Rousset's (incomplete) set, I wonder?
