Roehre that is a very utilitarian approach

I see meanwhile that the VSO are releasing a Das Lied with Ludwig and Kmentt conducted by Carlos Kleiber in 1967 !

      Well said.

Maybe musicians and music firms can then give non 'core' repertoire an outing.

Too many works are unrecorded, or do not have sufficient alternative recordings.

Beware though. The sound is reportedly very poor. See the information here: http://www.mdt.co.uk/mahler-das-lied...lo-musica.html

It is a reissue, but I am currently listening to Blu Ray audio of Bohm conducting the VPO in Bruckner/4. Stunning and more vibrant than the Blu Ray of Barenboim leading the Berlin Staatkapelle in the same work.

It seems that nobody else has been buying any CDs recently ?

Ah well - perhaps it is just me .

Maybe not particularly new but I have just got round to listening to Jonas Kaufmann's Winterreise . An extremely powerful and intensely moving performance to my ears.

Just out on disc, though the downloads have been available at eclassical for a couple of months, this, sadly, must be Frank Shipway's last recording.

Patience, Barbs, time is the evil, I'll try to report soon on new hi-res/CDs from BIS, Seattle and others.... health, business and domestic pressures just a bit, you know, Radio 3 concerts less than compelling, and Liverpool FC hardly lifting our spirits either... back soon, I hope...

Good idea for a thread though...

JLW and Barb, there has been a thread running since early 2011 which seems to be fit for purpose, so I've merged the new one with that. If people think a more eye-catching title is called for, that can be changed.

Can you unmerge them please . The whole point of the new thread was to enable people to record their responses to new releases rather than just comment on their arrival . The size of the old thread meant that reviews got lost .

Ah... I was responding to a request to make one thread. Would a title change to indicate that this is for reviews achieve both ends?

No not really for the reasons I have already outlined. Reviews get lost amongst the announcements of new releases.

Two new releases of music from opposite poles of music on Jewish themes.

A new recording (96 minutes) of light music "The Golden Age of Jewish Stage and Film Music (1925–1955)" from Cedille with several longer excerpts to whet the appetite here:

The New Budapest Orpheum Society, ensemble-in-residence in the Division of Humanities at the University of Chicago, has been tracing the origins

also available as a 24 bit flac download for $12.

Anything but light is Moses Pergament's "The Jewish Song" appearing for the first time on CD, a reissue of the LP recorded in concert. Stunning and almost unknown, it's had two reviews I've read which are well worth seeking out: Guy Rickards in Gramophone and Martin Anderson in IRR.

                            Listen for yourself here:

Pergament: Den judiska sången. Caprice: CAP21834. Buy CD or download online. Sven Olof Eliasson (tenor), Birgit Nordin (soprano) Kungliga Filharmonikerna Kör, Kungliga Filharmonikerna, James DePreist

PS I meant to say that this release serves as a wonderful tribute to James DePreist, a fine conductor.

It might be better in future

1 For those who want to merge a thread into another to say so on the forum so any objections can be raised

2 For mods to consult the person who started the thread - unless it is unarguable that two threads cover the same topic e.g an obit of a musician

I for one think it's a pity to separate off information about new announcements from peoples' comments about them - I think it's far more likely that things will get lost that way. But I see you've restarted a thread for reviews, Barb, so let's see how it goes - and what others think.
