I am sure it's Andre Rieu Sr on that recording, long standing conductor of the Amsterdam Chamber orchestra as well as of the Limburg Symphony Orchestra (1949-1980) in Maastricht. Conducted quite regularly the Concertgebouworkest i.a. Recordings of his were made for CBS Holland, Telefunken, Decca et al upto and including the late1970s. Nice and very HIP recordings of Mozart concertos KV 413-415 with Henkemans made in the mid 1960s on CBS e.g.

Andre Jr (that 3rd rate conductor and even worse violinist, not to mention his skills as arranger of popular tunes in order to make them palatable for people without ears and who only are able to count to three ) started his career in the orchestra of his father's.

Schumann Symphonies - SCO Robin Ticciati - I'm sure some have noticed a slight divergence of opinion........

'x5 …the finest set on disc [in] a decade…and perhaps the most impressive thing that Ticciati has done on disc so far… hearing these symphonies in such superbly played, convincingly Schumannesque performances is irresistible.' The Guardian

'CD From Hell - Ticciati Commits Suicide By Schumann: There's so much bad Schumann around, but I have to say that I'm shocked to have to include Robin Ticciati, normally such a fine musician, among the ever-growing crowd of Schumann misfits. Everything, and I mean everything, about these performances...' Classics Today

If that is Hurwitz surely you don't take him seriously ? Any more than Norman Lebrecht ?

After all the encomiums I have bought Benjamin Grosvenor's Dances recital - I am finding the more from Bach straight to Chopin a bit jarring . Very good but not quite sure it deserves such rave reviews .

My latest download acquisition has been Beethoven's complete works for cello and piano, played by Jean-Guihen Queyras and Alexander Melnikov (Harmonia Mundi).

I've listened right through and have been impressed. Not wildly, but positively. It's perhaps a bit bizarre, but it was Melnikov's name which attracted me to the set rather than Queyras's, and a first hearing had me noticing the piano much more often than the cello. This may be partly due to the recording balance which certainly doesn't highlight the cello, but it's also due to Alexander Melnikov's glorious playing. I need to listen again and pay more attention next time.

I've only just noticed this reply. Thanks for pointing it out. It should have been obvious to me since the recording in question was made in 1962 when Rieu Junior was only 13.

Keep listening. It improves on every hearing. Diapason, not known for rave reviews (except for Sir John Barbirolli!) loves it. A joy from start to finish. I know what you mean about Bach to Chopin (which phased me a bit on first hearing) but it does eventually all fall into place. One of the most joyful piano recital CDs I've heard.

My rather laboured point was that if Mr Rieu now qualifies as a 'Symphonic Maestro', we need to find another accolade for the likes of Kubelik rather urgently!
