I see a Walton box from EMI is forthcoming - 5 CDs and it seems to include Sargent's First Symphony and Previn's Belshazzar's Feast.

Does anyone know which recording of the Violin Concerto it contains? Maybe Ida Haendel rather than the not very good Menuhin .....

And while I'm sitting adding to these threads, the Fischer/Sacre du Printemps (at 24 bit 96khz) is, played at as loud a volume as you dare, a visceral experience - those drums .... The rest of it is pretty damn fine, too, including a wonderfully louche Tango.

Looking at the condutors listed on the cover my guess would be Menhuin.

I adored her fresh & wonderfully thought out Brahms VC with Daniel Harding & the Mozart Chamber Orch. I've seen her play the LvB in concert & her violin is as beautiful as it sounds on her recordings. I think I need to get this CD asap. Another faultless review in today's Grauniad:

If Beethoven's concerto is a wonderful collaborative effort then the performance of the Berg is even more remarkable, writes Andrew Clements

Nice to have a living artist being praised on these MBs - there is rather an emphasis on dead ones

                Fürtwängler Lives!

... but I think Ms Faust is a superb artist, too!

Did anyone hear the review of new releases by RC on CDR this morning?

I’m completely receptive to historic recordings, and not usually worried by the vagaries of their sound, but I thought the DVD of the Amadeus (playing Haydn) sounded atrocious – scratchy sound and an acoustic like that of a large galvanised tank. Nothing like the smoothness of the AQ as I remember them.

Yet RC made no mention of it, except that it was in mono – has his sensitivity been dulled by too long on certain morning programmes?

For those, like me, who have been hoping that the Collins Classics series of Peter Maxwell Davies orchestral works is issued on Naxos it looks like we need wait no longer:

Ben Grosvenor's Decca recording is available at 24/96.
A tempting e-mail from Qobuz this morning for "ancien" customers ("ancient" - alas, increasingly so) of a 50% discount on downloads (limited to one purchase but no limit on the number to be crammed into one's basket) and a memory of PJPJ's reference to this recording led me to include the 24/96 version of it, mainly because of 'Gaspard de la Nuit' but I am utterly captivated by the Chopin - and in stellar sound. A wonderful accompaniment to a beautiful sunny afternoon.

The less good news is that both hmv.com and amazon.co.uk are now charging £4.99 for 'pre-orders' of Naxos CDs. Until recently they tended to charge £3.99.

Naxos recently announced they were raising the RRP of their discs to £6.99 :( According to their press release they believe the new price still represents good value for money.
