It looks, too, as if the Fifth Symphony is on its own on disc 4, which is a bit mean: no recordings of any other works by "Ralf" they could have filled it with? And £33 is a bit too much for me with so many unknown factors involved - but I confess; I'm intrigued!

And me! The biggest 'punt' I took with Rozh, was his Sibelius set of symphonies, which turned out to be well worth the risk. RVW though - I'm not so sure; especially at that price. I can't somehow see them as being equal to say, Boult, Handley, Haitink, et al

If, and hopefully, when he price drops - fairly dramatically - and a bit more becomes known about it, I might well be interested, but as a purely speculative buy (at this stage, at least) - No! It ain't Naxos, after all!!!!

For release on Monday, a live Prom performance of Beethoven's Missa Solemnis from September 10 1982. I was present at this performance and met Solti and all of the soloists after the concert and all signed my programme. I've been waiting for nearly 32 years to hears this wonderful performance again at what was a memorable and eventful day for me. Very many thanks go to Laurie Watt of this Parish whose recording has been used for the release. Lady Solti was keen for this performance to be released and grateful thanks to her too.

Of all the live performances I've attended in 42 years concert-going, this was the one I wanted to see as a CD issue more than any other.
"The sound is the handwriting of the conductor" - Bernard Haitink

Actually - at about £5.50 per disc, it's cheaper than Naxos! Just shows how BRILLIANT and all those Bargain boxes has changed our attitudes to the "Super Bargain" price. (I haven't bought a new Naxos CD for a couple of years or more.)

There are two UK suppliers offering this for a tad under £30.

Amazon France comes in at £29.81 delivered using Amazon's currency converter (their delivery charge is just €3.85).

£30.00 + £1.50 p&p from Presto Classical. I'd still like to know more of what the set comprises, precisely. What roles do Weinberg, Polyansky and Abalian play?

Very true, when seen like that! (I kinda wish you hadn't alerted me to the comparison ! )

On Usenet's rec.music.classical.recordings, Christopher Webber writes:

They've been lurking around sub-rosa for some while, but this is the
1988-9 Moscow cycle's first official appearance on disc. The orchestral
playing reveals much that we don't usually hear (and the occasional
thing we wouldn't want to hear again!) and in general the
interpretations emphasise RVW's closeness to his teacher (or "French
polisher", as he put it) Ravel, to an intriguing degree.

Worth remembering that the 'Sea Symphony' pre-dates 'Daphnis and Chloe',
and that Ravel was a huge admirer of his mature pupil's work.

I seem to remember a recent R3 discussion (possibly on CD review) with Stephen Johnson in which he drew attention to the oft overlooked resemblances between VW and his French teacher.

Thanks, Hafod. As it was going to be delivered to France anyway, order duly swapped from .co.uk to .fr so, at about £4.50 a pop, it doesn't feel too expensive. I've been a bit spoiled by Zoverstocks and their £0.01 bargains, not to mention Universal Italy and their boxes.

The link to MDT supplied by ami from (#901) suggests that Rozhdestvensky conducts all the Symphonies, Abalian and Vereschagin trained the choirs for the Sea Symphony, Polyansky did a similar job for the voiceless chorus in the Antartica ... Weinberg?
